Master Pendragon is a supporting character in Hooky. He is introduced as a witch, specifically a soothsayer, who is trying to mend the relations between magical and non-magical communities. He is the adopted father of Nico, and teacher of his apprentices Dani and Dorian. He eventually becomes a minor antagonist in the story.

Appearance[]

Pendragon is an older man, seen with brown hair and a bushy, medium-length beard with bits of gray in it. He appears to have pale, blue eyes that are rarely seen - as he always wears a pair of glasses that are cracked in one lens. He is typically shown wearing a long black cloak, an orange veil with draped across the shoulder with a gem on it, and a black witch's cap with an orange ribbon and smooth gem inside. When he is preforming fortunes or seeing visions, he wears an orange turban with a smooth gem inside.

He is occasionally seen wearing more casual clothes. In these instances he tends to wear either button-up shirts or sweaters with a white shirt underneath with slacks, and no hats.

When he runs off leaving his life as a witch, he wears a brown cloak to disguise himself. He also briefly shaves his face entirely.

Roughly ten years before the start of the story he had less facial hair, just a mustache and no beard, and with no gray in it. His glasses were not cracked at the time either.

Personality[]

Pendragon is introduced as a seemingly kind and respectable wizard, whose main goal is to improve the image of witches in the eye of the kingdom. He is well liked by the townsfolk, who openly know he is a witch and are not bothered by this fact. He takes in Dorian and Dani as his apprentices when he first meets them, knowing the potential they have, and wish to make them good witches. He is serious and straightforward when teaching them, and later Monica and Nico, not wanting to waste time getting side tracked. However he seems to go easy on them, and lets them stray away from their lessons on occasion.

As the story continues however it is revealed how Pendragon can be a very cold and uncaring indivdual, taking more weight in what future he sees than the morals of his actions. He kept young Nico at a distance growing up, repeatedly telling Nico that magic is dangerous and chosing to lie to Nico about his magical abilities. This comes at a cost of their relationship. It is also revealed how Pendragon initally was set on killing the twins when they first met, and only stopped himself when he briefly doubted his vision. He is indifferent to helping save the twins on numerous occasions, only because he worries about his vision of them coming true, and continues to tell himself that not interfearing with the vision is "for the best."

He also stays out of the limelight, not wanting to be put in harm's way and lets other people handle things.

History[]

Pendragon most likely discovered his clairvoyance abilities at an early age, becoming a soothsayer when he was of age. During his soothsaying occupation, he encountered a young boy called Nico who was dying and in his mother’s arms. Pendragon healed him but cost his mother because she was then accused for being a witch and burned at the stake.

One day, Pendragon saw a vision that two twins would bring havoc onto the world and be claimed the King of Witches. Nico also saw this vision too, though he didn’t know it wasn’t a normal thing at the time. To try and prevent this disaster from happening, Pendragon wanted to make them live with him, to not have to go through the suffering they‘ll eventually endure.

Story[]

Introduction arc[]

Powers and abilities[]

Pendragon, being a natural-born witch, has some magical abilities of his own - though he does not use them very often since he doesn’t like magic.

Clairvoyance[]

Pendrgaon is a soothsayer, meaning he has the ability to see the future though the help of a crystal ball. This is not a common skill for witches to have, and apparently can not be learned - meaning he was born with the gift and honed it presumably at a young age. He uses this ability as a profession, and is well liked by the townsfolk who reach out to him for help. He also uses it to know about what’s going to happen in the wider world. This ability allowed him to see that the one member of the Wytte family was going to become the king of witches and that the twins, Dani and Dorian were going to bring havoc onto the world.

While never directly confirmed, it is implied that he is the most gifted of soothsayers, seeing as he was able to discern more from his vision about the king of the witches being for sure either Dani or Dorian, than the supposed best soothsayer in the land that was utilized by the Prison Guard at the Witches Sabbath.

Driving[]

Pendragon, like most adults, knows how to drive. He drove Mark, Nico, Monica and Dorian towards the village when Dani was going to be burned at the stake.

Healing[]

Pendragon has the ability to heal, using this ability to help a dying Nico when he was just a small child. Because of the outcome of this however, he seemed to have never used this ability again.

Relationships[]

Main Characters[]

  • Nico: Pendragon saved Nico from death of an unknown cause as a child after his birth mother took him to Pendragon. Nico's mother was burnt at the stake after being accused of healing Nico with witchcraft - and Pendragon, feeling guilty for being the cause of her death, adopted Nico. Feeling that his magic "dangerous" as a result of the incident, He tries to distance himself from Nico, and keeps Nico away from magic during his childhood. This causes a strain in their relationship as Nico grows up, feeling he was useless. Nico eventually stops considering Pendragon his father and briefly ran away from home, which Pendragon openly does not object to. Their relationship is permanently shattered when Pendragon betrays Nico and his friends by poisoning Dorian, still believing that he was the King of the Witches. Despite all this, it seems Pendragon does truly care for Nico. Pendragon knew Nico was a witch and soothsayer at a young age, and purposefully withheld this information from Nico because of his fear that magic would cause more harm. He occasionally used magic to help Nico, such as when he tried to ride a broom, to make him feel better. Eventually many years later, Pendragon feels remorse for his actions, and apologizes to Nico for the harm he caused him.
  • Dorian Wytte: Initially, Pendragon was set on killing Dorian when he first met him as he believed one of the twins would be the King of the Witches and end the world. Last second though, after meeting them in person and seeing how they weren't capable of causing harm, he changes his mind. He decides to make Dorian an apprentice because of his potential, and wanted to guide him to the side of good along with his twin sister. He was impressed with Dorian’s ability to execute a spell on the first try by reading it. He occasionally showed some concern for Dorian's lack of interest in anything but learning, such as when Dorian chose to take an exam instead of going to the beach. Throughout the story he questions his choice to spare them however, and is reluctant to save them in many situations, such as when Dorian was in trouble at the Witch's Sabbath. Eventually, he seemingly succeeds in stopping Dorian from potentially being the King of the Witches by poisoning him, however Monica's potion healed him and put him in a coma. Even after years pass and it's revealed he did not succeed in killing Dorian, he is reluctant to help save him.
  • Dani Wytte: Initially, Pendragon was set on killing Dani when he first met her as he believed one of the twins would be the King of the Witches, and end the world. Last second though, after meeting them in person and seeing how they weren't capable of causing harm, he changes his mind. He decides to make Dani an apprentice because of her potential, and wanted to guide him to the side of good along with his twin brother, though admittedly he was not as impressed in her skills as Dorian's. He was impressed (and also concerned) with the powerful curses that Dani could cast without a way to lift them. Despite his worry in Dani's potential future as Queen of the Witches, he does help save her on occasion, such as when she was nearly burnt at the stake, albeit reluctantly.
  • Monica: She arrived at his home because he's a soothsayer. During her visit, she asked about how to save William, her fiancé. He tells her that she’ll have blissful love in her future and that she can save him by staying with him, his apprentices and Nico. Along with this prediction, he has also said another one about her future.
  • Mark Evans: Pendragon has known Mark since he was a young child, and seems to be on friendly terms with his family. Mark thinks highly of Pendragon, though it is not directly shown how Pendragon feels towards Mark. When Dani was nearly burnt at the stake, Mark had no issue with Pendragon borrowing his family's delivery truck to save her.

Supporting Characters[]

  • Mr. Evans: Mr Evans and Pendragon seem to be on good terms with each other, and could be considered friends. When Pendragon first took in Nico as a child and was unsure of how to care for him, Evans even suggested taking in Nico himself. When Nico ran away from home briefly as a teenager, Pendragon offered to pay Evans to take care of Nico (though he firmly turned him down). When Dani was nearly burnt at the stake, Evans had no issue with Pendragon borrowing his family's delivery truck to save her.

Quotes[]

  • “I see a very high tower where you're gonna be locked, in the dark... Full moon nights, white roses, ashes and fire. But in opposite order, the ashes first, then the fires.” (to Monica)
  • "You finally came! You've taken so long!" (to Dani and Dorian)

Trivia[]

  • In early episodes, Pendragon would occasionally be seen without the cracks in his glasses. This would eventually stay consistent in the story, and would retroactively fixed in the print version of the story.
    • It's not shown exactly when or how Pendragon's glasses crack. His glasses are not cracked during his confrontation with Nico after he ran away, which only takes space a short time before the twins arrive. His glasses are already cracked when he first meets them.
