Nico is a witch and the adopted son of Pendragon. He originally thought he was a non-magic person until he found out that he is capable of the power of clairvoyance.

Appearance[]

He is a young boy born with bright ginger hair (a factor that led to his bullying in school), and deep gold eyes. He also has a band-aid on his nose, a classic recognizable character design, mainly because as a child, he believed scars and other marks/injuries were thought to be “cool.”

As for his clothing, they are “ordinary town” clothes, consisting of a ragged brown top with black laces sewn together, brown pants, and brown flats to accompany them. He also wears a green headband on his head and an earring on one ear (he wears two when he pierces the other ear), with some sort of piece of cloth usually tied to the headband.

After the time skip, Nico still keeps his piercings; however, he now has a coat to top off his outfit. He also grows his hair longer, tying it in a ponytail at times.

Personality[]

Nico is a positive person, despite his inner turmoil with himself. He typically puts others in front of himself and keeps his problems inside, believing to be a burden to those around him if he were to speak about it. He tries to be a logical person, however, his emotions seem to affect his thinking and decisions more than he'd like. For example, Nico completely cut off Mark Evans due to the fact he felt betrayed and jealous of rumors that Mark pitied him.

History[]

Nico was born in an unknown village, son of a non-magical woman. When he was a child, he fell sick and was on the verge of death, so his mother sought help in other villages until she met Pendragon, who cured the child. When Nico and his mother came back to their village, the townsfolk saw the child was magically healthy again and thought the woman was a witch. Since she owed Pendragon for saving her son, she choose to not reveal the wizard's name and was executed in his place. After that, Pendragon took it upon himself to take care of the child. Soon after arriving at Pendragon's village, the child met and befriended the son of a friend of the wizard, Mark Evans, who was a couple of years older than him. The two started to hang out often together, and since Pendragon wasn't good with children, their friendship helped a lot, making Nico feel comfortable and helped him to settle in.

One day, Nico saw Pendragon looking at a green dragon through his crystal ball and thought it was Pendragon's magic, although Pendragon often yelled at him about “disturbing his magic,” or that “magic was dangerous!” Soon, Nico ended up idolizing Pendragon and wanting to learn for himself how to use magic. In the meantime, he also enrolled in school, though he would often neglect his studies to learn magic instead, even if without any good result. Soon, he realized he was not cut out for magic and that Pendragon didn't see any potential in him, and mostly stopped trying to make Pendragon proud of him. He would often stay at the Evans house and vent to Mark about it. However, he soon realized Mark was very popular at school, and that people would often compare them. In time, he started to feel like he was never enough, nor for Pendragon, nor for the people around him, and that his only friend overshadowed him. For this reason, he decided to quit magic and to distance himself from Mark.

Ch54

Nico and Mark in his flashback.

Nico had to repeat the year because of his neglected studies and he used this as an opportunity to make new friends. One day, though, Nico caught Pendragon looking at Dani and Dorian Wytte through his crystal ball. He was amazed to see Dorian cast a spell after reading it once, but when he heard Pendragon say he wanted the twins to become his pupils, Nico immediately felt betrayed by his adopted father, who never wanted to teach him magic. So he lashed out at him and ran away from home.[2]

Nico took refuge in the Evans' house. He didn't want to tell Mark why he got into a fight with Pendragon, but asked his friend to not tell the wizard he was there, which Mark did anyway. Pendragon came to meet Nico and told him that he thought it was better if he continued to live with Mark. Feeling betrayed again, this time both by Pendragon and Mark, Nico rushed out of Mark's house. Nico was chased by Mark, who managed to stop him by grabbing his wrist. Since he was still angry from before, Nico lashed out at Mark, breaking their friendship and leaving him behind.[3]

Introduction arc[]

Gallery Nico

Nico persuading Dani and Dorian to follow him.

Nico is playing with his friends near the station when he accidentally throws his ball towards a train's window. The ball breaks the glass and almost hits two of the passengers, who reveal to be the kids he saw in Pendragon's crystal ball, Dani and Dorian Wytte. After the first moment of indecision, he decides to bring them to the wizard's house. As the Wyttes study at Pendragon's house, Nico often comes over to spend time with or tease them, often enlisting Dani's help for schemes. On one occasion, he asked Dani to help him reclaim a plane taken by Mark and makes a deal with her to always call her "Queen" or "Lady" Dani. When Monica arrives, Nico escorts her and becomes her personal bodyguard.

Nico

Nico enjoys spending time with Dani but constantly belittles Dorian, calling out his clumsy nature and limited social experience. Despite Dorian's admiration of Nico being a proper boy and wanting to impress him, Nico continues to belittle him for unknown reasons. One day Nico goes too far with his teasing, and Dani retaliates by cursing him with a depowering spell she had learned that morning. The spell fails, however, and instead makes him smaller. From then on Nico is forced to live as a miniature version of himself, hurting his ego and making him practically useless. Despite multiple attempts by both Dani and Dorian to restore his size, Nico is permanently shrunk. Because of the general distrust of magic, and because of Nico's pride, Nico is isolated from his home and friends but after apologizing to Dorian the curse is broken and Nico is back to his real size.

Witches' Sabbath arc[]

One day Nico and the twins go out on an errand and discover a candy house in the woods. Dani and Nico separate from Dorian and discover corpses in cages locked in the basement. Nico is disturbed by this but is unable to do anything about it. When the villagers enter the basement and threaten Dani, Nico is unable to defend her and instead runs to Dorian, who sends him home on Carlo to get help. When he tells Master Pendragon about the situation, Pendragon wonders if he should have left the twins to die. Nico is speechless, but Monica arrives and demands that Pendragon help, diffusing the situation. After Mark and Monica save Dani, Nico is left in the car, and he demands that Pendragon tell him his reasoning, accidentally calling him his father. Pendragon refuses to talk and instead tells Nico not to get too close.

To relax, Nico and the others go swimming and fight a giant squid. After Dani kills the squid with the same spell she used on Nico, she becomes too frightened to use her magic on him again, making it more difficult for him to regain his size. Dorian makes a potion out of squid ink which should have worked to undo the shrinking, but it seems ineffective. Disappointed, Nico watches Dani give her love potion to Mark, but after it goes wrong he jumps in to help her. The potion activates with the full moon, and Nico is temporarily able to regain his size and protect Dani. This change is nullified the next morning.

After hearing about a meteor shower, the group makes plans to camp in the woods, but the twins attempt to sneak away to attend the Sabbath. Nico and Monica follow them. Nico joins Dani and watches her nearly get captured, then rejoins the rest of the group and participates in the campout. That night the twins disappear and he and Monica go after them.

Ep35 Pendragon talking to Monica and Nico

Pendragon talking to Monica and Nico.

To find the Wyttes, Nico and Monica infiltrate the Sabbath disguised as witches and are helped by Alex and her group, who believe that Nico is a pixie. Among the group of witches at the broom test they discover Pendragon. Pendragon once again insists that they should not save the twins, this time elaborating that he saw in a vision that one of them would become the King of Witches. Nico and Monica reject him and chase after Will, then the Wyttes. When they are finally reunited, Nico plays cards with Dani until Pendragon attacks the car, knocks out the Wyttes, and takes them home. Nico advocates for his friends with Monica, and he is relieved when the twins wake up.

King of Witches arc[]

Tiny nico

Nico in his tiny form.

After Dani's decision to swear off magic, he becomes jealous of the others. Nico watches his companions move on with their lives, and sees Dorian take his place in his friend group and grow closer to Monica, and Mark takes his place at Dani's side. Nico lashes out at them and runs away depressed. Realizing that most of the problems were his own fault, he apologizes to Mark, then to Dorian. The shrinking is revealed to be a curse that was broken by Nico's apology, and he regains his size permanently.

Ch60

Nico at the ball.

Nico attends the ball at the castle with the others, attempting to dance with Dani, and leaves the ball with Mark and Dani to join the village party. Then the witch army invades, he wants to fight back and has to stop Dani when she begins her rampage. The group escapes to Pendragon's, only to find the house burning. Homeless, Nico joins the group in their house in the woods. Later, he and Mark return to their town to search the rubble for anything useful. Nico discovers Pendragon's crystal ball and takes it home. When he touches it, he sees a vision of Prince William, but when he attempts to show it to the others, he discovers that he is the only one to see the pictures, and therefore has clairvoyance magic. This revelation overwhelms him.

Nico and the others attempt to find Will but are stopped by patrols of witches, and searches for Monica after she is knocked out of the car. He helps Dani and Monica make their potions for the villagers, then visits Alice and Romas, where he attempts to dissuade her from continuing on. This Nico is revealed to be an illusion. The true Nico wakes up after being stepped on and then goes around stepping on the others. His nightmares are undisclosed.

Nico sees more visions that guide the group to the desert where Will is being held. They arrive in Amir's kingdom, only to discover that a massive dragon is devouring its people and that the survivors are offering a sacrificial human every day to keep it at bay. Nico believes that he might die and makes his peace with the other members, but fails to confess his feelings to Dani. Later he confides in Mark that he has seen a vision of Dani crying, surrounded by a dark aura. The group goes out to fight the dragon, and Dorian and Monica leave the other members of the team behind to chase Damien and find Will. Dani teams up with Princess Aisha to follow on foot. She, Mark, and Nico go into the underwater caverns, where Dani and Mark are dragged away by sirens and Nico is attacked by a giant squid. To protect him, Dani uses the shrinking curse, and Nico stays with her for the rest of the battle. Nico returns to his full size after the witches leave and the danger is gone. Nico is not comforted by this, and worries about a vision of Dani crying. Later he sees Dani wearing the same dress as in his vision and becomes nervous.

3 Year Time-Skip arc[]

Ch190

Nico and Dani while cursed.

When Angela invades the kingdom and kills the King and Queen, Nico is awakened from a nightmare based on his vision and runs to Dani, who has been taken by her mother. He discovers her just as she is attempting and failing to trap her mother, and attacks Angela to protect her. When Angela retaliates, Dani shrinks Nico once more and tells her mother that she has teleported him. When Angela knocks Dani out, Nico hides in her pocket and is taken to the castle, where he attends the funeral with Dani and her mother. When the witches see Dorian's apparent death and Dani becomes possessed, Nico is trapped in his tiny form and is only able to gain his height when he is by Dani's side. During the Time skip, Nico travels between Mark and Aisha's team of revolutionaries and Dani's castle. He constantly pleads with Dani to stop and attempts to bring her back but is ineffective.

After Pendragon reveals the fate of Dorian, Nico is crushed by the betrayal of his father figure and throws himself into undoing his bad actions. Nico watches while Mark, Aisha, and Damien fight the dragon to rescue Dorian, then accompanies them to the castle to find Dani, and then to the capital to regroup with Monica. After Angela's powers are sealed away, Nico suddenly returns to normal size, flattening Mark. When the group searches for Dani, Nico bonds with Dorian over their anguish for Dani and the two of them agree to work together. When Dani appears, Nico tries to appease her, but she calls him a traitor. Nico watches the stronger members of the team fight Dani and deduces that Dani is under the influence of an evil spirit, then locates it in the cat. When Dorian defeats the spirit, Nico attempts to tidy up his appearance but is crushed to find that Dani's memories are still locked away.

Nico hurdling a stone wall dressed up as his younger self.

Nico has a vision with Dorian wearing shorts and believes that recreating the past is the best way to reclaim Dani's memories, and he helps Dorian and Damien recreate Pendragon's house. He changes into a version of his childhood clothes to try and bring Dani's memories back, but only overwhelms her. When he challenges her to a race, the two of them run into a giant sea monster. Dani's subjects return to reclaim her, and when Nico challenges them, he is stabbed by a beam of energy.

Nico and Dani are locked inside a pile of rocks she created to protect herself. Nico asks if it is his fault that she has lost her memories, then realizes that he doesn't have the power to do that. He discovers that Dani has cursed herself to protect her from the reality of the war, and Dorian's 'death'. Dorian is able to break into the wall, but none of them are able to help Nico because Monica's potions are destroyed. Nico tells Dorian about the curse, then passes out from the blood loss. He does not wake up until after Dani regains her memories.

Series Finale[]

Nico scamming customers

Nico using his clairvoyance to scam customers.

After Monica and Dani set everything straight, ending the war, Nico makes money by using his powers to scam villagers. It is revealed that he is still spending time with Mark and Dani, but unlike Dorian and Monica, has no clear goal. To stay with Dani, he becomes one of Monica's official messengers to spread their message to the other kingdoms.

Despite Nico's obvious feelings, Dani asks him to give her some time. She does, however, mention that she wants him by her side, asking him to follow her on her travels. Nico and Dani continue as messengers and use their magic as they go along. In one of these locations, Nico is reunited with Pendragon for the first time since his banishment.

Powers and abilities[]

Though Nico is a witch, he does not know much if any basic magic. He does, however, have a few skills of his own.

Clairvoyance[]

Nico has the rare and unique art of clairvoyance, being able to see into the future just like his adopted father. He thought it was normal up until he tried to reveal the future he saw in a crystal ball and no one could see into it except him. He however does not use his clairvoyance as an occupation, instead he scams people with tarot reading cards. During many times in the series, he used this ability to be able to help his allies, especially with Dani, revealing the curse she had inflicted upon herself and the spirit which controlled some part of her.

Martial arts[]

Though not used as much in the series, it is mentioned that Nico knows and can perform martial arts well.

Natural athleticism[]

Nico is naturally fit, having regular broom flying races with Dani and the help of Dorian as he could not naturally fly with a broom.

Relationships[]

Main characters[]

  • Dorian Wytte: Nico initially looks down on Dorian, ignoring his desperate attempts to be friends out of pride and jealousy. Nico at first envies Dorian's courage, dependability, and magical talent. Once Nico comes to terms with this, he and Dorian become good friends, to the point where they bond over their shared love for Dani. Nico is annoyed by Dorian's cautious personality, and he enjoys teasing him, but they have a good relationship despite their obvious differences.
  • Dani Wytte: At first, he looked down on both Dani and her brother, however, because he considered her very cute, it was hard for him to stay mad at her. The two have a good relationship, with Dani helping in getting back an aeroplane model from the cafe that Mark owned. She does eventually on the condition that Nico calls her “princess” or “queen.” Later on, it is revealed that Nico likes Dani romantically. Nico often tries to reveal his feelings, and while Dani seems to reciprocate them, their relationship is undefined. During her dark period, he was the only one by her side and was able to maintain a close bond despite her suppressed personality and lost memories.
  • Monica: Nico originally meets Monica and becomes her bodyguard, but over time they become very close friends. Nico feels very comfortable around Monica and enjoys teasing her, but he dislikes her interest in romance. She is the only one he originally tells about his crush, though she already knew.
  • Mark Evans: Nico and Mark were close childhood friends until Nico developed an inferiority complex, one of the contributing factors to the sudden end of their friendship. Mark and Nico's relationship is also slightly strained by their shared interest in Dani. They appear to be on better terms now though Nico still gets jealous of the times Mark and Dani are close to each other.

Supporting characters[]

  • Pendragon: Nico looks up to Pendragon and sees him as his father since his mother passed away. Nico wished for Pendragon to teach him magic and finally be able to refer to Pendragon as his father, but this remains unfulfilled and he still sees Pendragon, or "Master," as a being who looks down upon him; believing it's his own inferiority. When he discovers Pendragon's darker personality, he is emotionally scarred and feels responsible for Pendragon's bad choices. Nico is uncomfortable around Pendragon and feels conflicted whenever he is mentioned, though he does appear to want to reconcile, which was hinted at in the finale.
  • Ivy and Anne: The two don’t interact very much with Nico in the comic but they don’t have bad relations towards each other and were worried when either one got hurt.
  • Mr. Evans: Mr. Evans looked after Nico and treated him as a second son, being strict with him when needed. Nico eventually pushed him away in his head because of his inferiority complex to everyone. He didn’t want to see Mr. Evans in a nice light, instead picturing him as a rotten person who was mean and bullied people.
  • Alex: The two had a good friendship when Alex was still alive. Alex suggested Nico get a second piercing, implying they might have bonded over the same things. He was distraught when she was killed.
  • Barry: The two weren’t as close as him and Alex but they did respect one another and most likely played cards with each other.
  • Noah: He and Noah respect each other and care for one another, though, not to a close degree.

Quotes[]

  • "Why walk when we can race? Life's too short to waste our time going for a walk." (to Dani)
  • "Now I know why Dani's curse broke today!" (to Mark)
  • "You can keep it, for real. It looks better on you" (to Dani)
  • "Aaand, they're gone. Sigh, I hate witches"
